Seasonal Vegetables & Fruit of Iowa Poster
$26.00

Like many people in their 30s, I’ve recently decided to start a garden. Doing even a minute amount of research into the topic taught me that I know basically nothing about growing food, and that my grasp on food seasonality in our region left almost everything to be desired. Although I consider myself especially unprepared for the upcoming growing season, I thought there might be others that could relate. And thus, a poster was born.

This Seasonal Vegetables & Fruits of Iowa poster was inspired by my green thumb journey, and also a desire to understand my local food system better. This visual resource is the perfect wall accessory if you’re starting your own garden adventure, want to know what to look for each week at the farmers market, want to eat more seasonally, or want a heads up as to when you can expect your garden friends to start dropping tomatoes and zucchini on your doorstep by the truckload. So many uses for one beautiful poster!

This poster was printed with love right here in Des Moines at ephemera, on amazing French Paper Co. 125# cardstock. It measures 9”x24” and is hefty enough to lay flat on the wall. If you want to get even more nerdy with it, the paper we used is Midwest-made from post-consumer waste fiber, using 100% renewable energy and certified forest safe (FSC®). If we’re going to celebrate the splendor of Mother Earth, we might as well try to save her in the process.

This is a super-limited first run — only 48 copies produced! At this time, this product is only available for local-to-Des Moines pick-up—shipping coming soon, hopefully!

Common Wildflowers of Iowa Poster
$26.00

When I was in college, I was the communications intern for a conservation non-profit headquartered in Des Moines. I didn’t *really* know anything about conservation or Iowa’s native landscapes, but my job was to write about it, and design publications that highlighted the natural beauty of Iowa. The Iowa landscape, and the prairie landscape more broadly, doesn’t get a lot of love, but if you search in the right pockets, and you’re willing to pay attention, there is so much beauty here. And through that work (I stayed at that org for 7 years), I got to see some of the best pockets of the state, and it shifted my idea of what makes a place beautiful. I dove into wildflowers and wildlife, and grew closer to nature.

This Common Wildflowers of Iowa poster was born out of that burgeoning passion. Wildflowers helped me understand the cycles of nature and the transition between seasons. They became how I marked time, how I understood ecosystems, and how I knew my place in the larger scheme. If you’ve ever felt that tug of Mother Nature or the seasons, this poster is for you too.

This phenology calendar is for those of us who want to stop and smell the prairie roses, who want to better understand the nature around us, who want to plant so that we have blooms all season long, and who want to see that often hidden beauty grow. I picked the flowers that meant the most to me as I was learning to identify them, and that you can widely find throughout the state. Give me some grace on the bloom times shown—I tried to represent the full picture of all the regions and ecosystems in our state, and when you’ll find the flowers. I hope the poster inspires you to venture out and learn about your own pocket.
